I was fascinated by the concept of this project and was keen to hear more. As a postgraduate in Anthropology I have always been fascinated by people’s stories, wherever they come from. I guess that’s how I become so entrenched in social media and blogosphere, it’s just another avenue to seek out and be inspired by the stories of others.
Every single one of us has a unique perspective on the world, and often we can understand that perspective by delving a little deeper into their story.
My favourite thing about this story by Amir is that he has the courage to share his less than favourable past in order to explain the good that he is now doing through his social enterprise.
It’s just a minute long so give it a moment of your time to just listen and watch another human being’s story.
‘Amir grew up in a rough estate which made him see things differently. Knowing that more young people went into prison than those who’ve continued education, he felt the need to take action.
At a young age, Amir used to buy and sell bicycles for pocket money but he later realised it’s not just a piece of metal, it’s something of value. With this realisation, he created ‘Your Bike’, a project that gives young people training and employment opportunities. He believes that the people he has worked with have talents that need to be found. More than the money, Amir’s drive stems from his ability to change someone’s life. He believes that by throwing a stepladder back to where he came from can help others get a step up as well.’
Lorraine’s story is about how she took a terrifying circumstance and turned it into a positive force for good to help others like her. Check out her story here.
The campaign is about uncovering extraordinary people, but I believe everyone is extraordinary. It’s just that sometimes we have to dig a little deeper to find out what it is about their story. Sometimes it is obvious, such as Amir’s story about, but for some of us we are like oysters … a little hard to crack open but inside there could be something pretty special.
