Switzerland: Cafe De Grancy (French Restaurant)

On my final night in Lausanne, Switzerland, my bestie took me out for a slap-up meal at Cafe De Grancy (you may have seen the video tour I made as I walked to the restaurant). It is a charming French cafe restaurant just the other side of the train station and is very popular. I turned up around 6.30pm and the bar section, which is a selection of comfy sofas and chairs at the front, was full and buzzy with folk sipping wine. The majority of the tables were filled and luckily we had booked ahead.

The decor is simple and chic. There is dividing bookcase between the bar sofas and the restaurant tables which is filled with board games and books. It is decidedly relaxed and yet the food is gastro-heaven.

We kept it simple (I’m glad we did) and skipped the starters. For mains I had the Smoked Duck and Foie Gras Salad and my bestie had the Seafood Carpaccio. It was the first time I had tried Foie Gras, it’s not something I would think to eat and I’m still a bit uneasy about the ethics of the food. But it is my bestie’s favourite and I love duck so I gave it a try. I have to say, reluctantly, that it was sublime. The flavours were dense, earthy and rich. The salad was the perfect fresh balance for the meat and it was finished with a sweet balsamic glaze for a nice kick. The portions are huge and I was sadly unable to pick a dessert. That must the first time I’ve ever been full from a salad. The bestie’s main was very light but filled with lots of different textures which I found very interesting. The whole thing was perfectly fresh but strangely filling too.

We could have easily whiled away the hours drinking wine and picking at our food as we nattered away like two best friend’s who don’t catch up as much as they want to do. And we pretty much did that. Although we did move on to a cosy little bar up the road for a nightcap afterwards.

At Cafe De Grancy

Cafe De Grancy is pretty pricey but the quality of the food and the ambience of the restaurant make it worth the treat. The service was fine and we were very happy with our meal. I would recommend it for anyone heading to Lausanne any time soon.

Don’t you just love it when a simple evening is made so memorable by the place you spend it in?
