What Makes You Happy?

A couple of weeks ago I spent an afternoon interviewing the folks of Birmingham along with a film crew and the lovely folks at Grand Central. I was on a mission to find out what makes the people of Birmingham happy.

I feel like I might have missed my calling! I absolutely LOVED interviewing people. It is so rewarding to try to tease out the answers and find out what people really think. All the while trying to make them feel relaxed and comfortable with a giant camera over my shoulder pointing right at them.

Interviewing people was a challenge at times, if they got stage fright or couldn’t think what to say, I found that I needed to ask questions in several different ways to tease the answers out of them. And by the end of the day I figured out a few ways to make them feel at ease.

The most satisfying part though was hearing all of the answers to my questions about what makes the people of Birmingham happy. As my newly adopted to home, it was great to listen to stories and feelings about this city. The responses were a great range of things, from food and going out, spending time with loved ones, shopping, travel and, of course, community.

Of course, this times in seamlessly with Grand Central as a destination in Birmingham. Not only is it home to a massive transport hub downstairs (hello New Street Station!) which regularly zooms me around the country on my various work assignments, but Grand Central is also a fab shopping and dining spot. I can often be found supping up plates upon plates of sushi, pho, tapas or shakshuka from one of the restaurants upstairs. Or I can be found wandering in and out of shops such as John Lewis, The White Company, Foyles, and Jo Malone.

It’s safe to say I do spend a lot of time at Grand Central!

What makes me happy? Am I allowed two things? They’re related, I promise.

For me, what makes me happy in life is being able to travel and explore the world around me, meeting new people, learning new things, and creating new memories from the experience. On the flipside, what makes me equally happy is the feeling of coming home and being somewhere familiar and relaxed.
